Welding correctly with fume extraction torches: 5 practical tips for optimal fume extraction

Fume extraction is becoming increasingly important wherever welding takes place. When using extraction hoods, the fumes must first pass over the welder’s head and thus their respiratory organs and are inevitably inhaled. Such solutions are not recommended. Welding with fume extraction torches is a better option. They feature integrated extraction at source and capture the fumes directly at the point of origin.

5 practical tips for welding correctly with fume extraction torches:

Tip 1: Choose the right fume extraction torch for your power requirements

For welding thin sheet metal, minor repair or workshop tasks, as well as for finishing work, a gas cooled MIG/MAG extraction torch rated up to 250 amps is often sufficient. This means you can use a lightweight extraction torch for such welding tasks. The same applies to the xFUME® TIG, which was developed to ensure safe TIG welding across all amperage ranges. Since these particles are invisible, the dangers of TIG welding – specifically the risks associated with inhaling the fumes – are still underestimated today.

As the amperage increases and we move into the class of liquid cooled torches, the weight of a welding torch naturally increases as well. This also applies to fume extraction torches. Tip 2: Use the right extraction nozzle for better access

Due to the additional fume extraction, extraction torches obviously consist of more material than standard welding torches. This extra material inevitably affects accessibility to the workpiece and the joint to be welded. This results in a larger front end due to the additional extraction pipe bend and the extra extraction nozzle on the gas nozzle. As a result, extraction torches still have a reputation for restricting visibility of the process. With the right set of wear parts, both good accessibility and a clear view of the process can be ensured for nearly every fume extraction torch.   1. Standard extraction nozzle: the perfect combination of accessibility and extraction efficiency
  2. Narrow extraction nozzle: when the primary focus is on improved accessibility or when the tight geometry of the component leaves no other option. Because the welding fume intake openings are located farther from where the fumes are generated, this extraction nozzle has a slightly reduced extraction efficiency.
  3. Gas nozzle designed for maximum extraction efficiency, provided the components allow it, while ensuring the highest possible safety. Extraction nozzle originally developed for flux-cored wire welding.

This means:

  • When welding with fume extraction torches, select a gas nozzle and extraction nozzle that are suitable for the component and the welding task
  • For tight spaces, use narrow gas nozzles positioned farther away from the fume extraction intake openings
  • The following always applies: test on the component itself to determine what works best for the welding task

Tip 3: Consider the angle of the fume extraction torch

Welding generates heat, which causes welding fumes to rise upward, where they then disperse into the surrounding air. When welding with extraction torches, the best fume extraction is therefore achieved when the torch is held into the rising column of fumes. In this ideal position, a fume extraction torch such as those in the xFUME® series, used in conjunction with a mobile extraction system from the xFUME® series by ABICOR BINZEL, captures up to 99 % of the emissions generated.

When welding with fume extraction torches, the amount of fumes that can be extracted may be reduced depending on the welding position and the angle of the extraction torch. Welding position PA – known as the flat position when welding butt and fillet welds, for example – is ideal for fume extraction. The slight thrusting motion of the welding process pushes the extraction torch directly into the column of fumes. Work performed in position PB – horizontal welding of fillet welds – is similarly easy to extract. All other positions are considered constrained positions, as they are not within the welder's comfort zone. These include PC (transverse welding), PD (horizontal overhead welding), PE (overhead welding), PG (vertical-down welding), and PF (vertical-up welding).

That means:

  • Adjust the position of the extraction torch so that the extraction nozzle is directed away from the upward-moving fumes, provided this is technically feasible and permissible
  • If possible, use manipulators so that you can ideally work in welding position PA or PB
  • When working in constrained positions, always adjust the air supply using the slider control, which is located on the top of the handle on xFUME® fume extraction torches

Tip 4: Set the optimal extraction power

There are still concerns that welding with fume extraction torches causes too much shielding gas to be extracted, which could compromise the quality of the weld. Insufficient shielding gas leads to oxidation and porosity. As a result, the weld no longer meets the required quality standards. Therefore, before welding with extraction torches, check the extraction power of the welding torch itself. For this purpose, we recommend an extraction performance test tube (see fig.) such as those offered by ABICOR BINZEL. This test tube is available for various torch types and uses a color-coded marking to indicate the optimal setting for the extraction flow rate. Alternatively, ask your welding supplier if they can measure the actual extraction performance when commissioning new extraction systems.

There are several ways to adjust the exhaust airflow:

1. Using an air intake regulator on the fume extraction torch

2. or using the power control on the fume extraction system

The most flexible and quickest way to adjust the supply air is to use the slider on the fume extraction torch.

That means:

  • Your goal should always be a combination of efficient fume extraction and good welding results achieved through optimal shielding gas coverage
  • Adjust the fume extraction directly using the extraction system or the supply air controller on the extraction torch
  • If you are dissatisfied with the welding results, also check the angle of the fume extraction torch, the choice of gas nozzle, or the type of extraction torch selected

Tip 5: Check and maintain the fume extraction torch regularly

With its extraction function, a fume extraction torch does not just capture the fumes. Welding release agents applied during the pre-treatment of components also evaporate during welding and are extracted along with the fumes. These particles accumulate in the extraction nozzle, inside the torch head and the cable assembly – and also in the handle of the fume extraction torch.

The simple conclusion here is: the more deposits there are, the poorer the extraction performance. Regular functional checks when welding with fume extraction torches ensure that they operate smoothly and that the extraction performance does not deteriorate unnoticed.

That means:

  • Regularly inspect the extraction nozzle, torch neck, and cable assembly
  • Replace heavily soiled parts immediately
  • DO NOT use compressed air to blow out debris, as this can cause hazardous particles to enter the respiratory tract
  • It is best to replace soiled torch parts at an extraction table with the extraction system turned on

Conclusion:

Today, fume extraction torches have advanced to the point where they are very similar to standard welding torches in terms of handling, weight, and accessibility. When welding without a fume extraction torch, the health consequences of inhaling welding fumes can last a lifetime.
