What Should I Know Before Buying a Torch Cleaning Station?

Even if you are already convinced of the advantages of a torch cleaning station, there are still some important things to consider before you buy. With the right choice of torch cleaning station, you can optimize your welding process without welding spatter being an issue.

On the one hand, there are criteria that directly affect the torch cleaning station and the torch being cleaned. On the other hand, you should also keep an eye on the environment in which welding takes place. But let's start first with the torch cleaning station.

Reamers and Clamps Must Fit

Since torch cleaning stations usually work according to the clamp-reaming principle, you should know the geometry of the welding torch and consumables, to select the reamer and the clamp set of the torch cleaning station. The reamers can be adapted to your respective welding torch. The most important thingsto note are the torch type and the respective consumable parts. The clamp set is also adapted to the respective torch, in such a way that the clamp corresponds exactly to the outer geometry of the gas nozzle of the welding torch. The versatile torch cleaning stations can be easilyadapted to the respective application.

Process Reliability Using the Right Wire Cutting Device

Another point is the wire cutter, which you should always choose as an option because of the defined stick-out length. The wire cutter simply cuts off an excess piece of welding wire to ensure a defined stick-out upon the arc starting. It also removes beads of sweat and tarnish on the copper-plated welding wire. All this has a positive effect on the start of the welding process. It is of great advantage if the welding wire is clamped in the wire cutting device directly below the cutting plate, using the pin-and-shear method. Thus, the wire is not bent during cutting and the end of the wire is exactly in the right place when ignited.

Injection Unit – Reduced Spatter Adhesion

Now let’s move onto the injection units commonly found on torch cleaning station. The use of such is recommended, since the spraying of the gas nozzle extends the maintenance intervals and spatter adhesion is reduced. With an encapsulated injection unit, they can even prevent the anti-spatter agent from spreading unintentionally in the welding cell. If additional spraying with anti-spatter is not urgently necessary due to high cleaning rates or if spatter is not an issue for your process, then you may not need an injection unit.

Using the Correct Interface: Connect, Weld, and Clean

In the next step, you should think about the way in which the torch cleaning station in your system is controlled. The different possibilities of control are digital and analog signals as well as BUS interfaces. This is individually dependent on the system in which the torch cleaning station is to be integrated. Depending on the complexity of the existing system, you can choose the various torch cleaning stations.
